You will need to obtain a few skill books.
Command Center Upgrades
This skill will allow you to upgrade your command centers. For each additional level of this skill that you complete you will be able to upgrade your command centers an additional level. Each command center upgrade will increase your power and CPU output. Your extractors and factories all use power and CPU. The number of structures that you can construct will be limited by the level of your command center.
Planetary Consolidation
This skill will allow you to colonize one additional planet. Without this skill you can colonize one planet. If you complete all five levels of this skill you will be able to colonize six planets.
You will also need an industrial ship.
You will need an industrial ship to bring command centers to prospective planets. Command centers require 1000m3 cargo space each. You will also have to bring what you produce from your planets to a station.
You should fit your ship with expanded cargo holds. this will make a big difference in how much you can haul at one time. Larger cargo capacity means fewer trips to your planets. If you are going to colonize low security planets I would also recommend that you fit a cloaking device to your ship.
Planet Selection
Now we need some planets. We don’t want to colonize planets randomly though. before we make our selection we need to decide what it is we want to produce and what planets we will need to extract the necessary materials from.
A great place to help you decide what materials to produce is Eve University. They have charts that will tell you what you can extract from each planet and what you can make from each material. If you want to go a step further they provide you with an entire production tree. If you are producing materials for resale I would recommend that you check the market for pricing of individual items.
Once you have determined what it is you need you just have to purchase the needed command centers and head out into space. Travel to the system that you would like to use for your planets. Then use your overview to find the appropriate planet types.
Congratulations! You have colonized a planet.
